What Is a Conversion Rate and Why Does It Matter?

June 9, 2026

Your conversion rate is the percentage of website visitors who take the action you want, fill out a form, call you, make a purchase. It is the single most important metric on your website.

How to calculate conversion rate

Conversion Rate = (Conversions / Visitors) x 100.

If 1,000 people visit your site and 30 fill out your contact form, your conversion rate is 3%. Simple, but the implications are massive.

Why conversion rate matters more than traffic

Most businesses obsess over traffic. But doubling your conversion rate has the exact same effect as doubling your traffic, with zero additional ad spend. If you get 1,000 visitors per month at 2% conversion (20 leads), improving to 4% gives you 40 leads from the same traffic. Improving your conversion rate is often the highest-ROI investment you can make.

What is a good conversion rate?

A strong website conversion rate is in the range of 10 to 15%. If you are below 2%, something is fundamentally broken. If you are between 2 and 5%, targeted improvements can deliver significant gains.

How to improve your conversion rate

Add your phone number to the header. Put a CTA above the fold. Speed up your site. Add testimonials near forms. Simplify your forms (fewer fields means more submissions). And never send paid traffic to your homepage, use dedicated landing pages.
